My name is Summer Randell often known by my family as Cydi – my farming father’s offsider.

After completing a Bachelor of Learning Management at Central Queensland University I realised my passion was not in the classroom but was still out in the field. So, I began as an operator in the coal industry in 2006 and since then have progressed my career as a mining supervisor and project manager for:

• Production
• Infrastructure
• Community
• Organisational culture and
• Process improvement projects

I have supported different senior leadership teams as a Business Improvement Superintendent and assisted many community groups to obtain funding for vital infrastructure. In each role I have genuinely loved implementing structured solutions for a range of problems.

Throughout my career I have seen firsthand how the noise of an urgent task can distract a leader from completing their important goals. It is extremely common to find a tier-one dig unit working in an unproductive face because a few weeks prior, when planning decisions were being made, key leaders were focused on the wording of an incident investigation. It is disappointing how many opportunities have been lost to engage with the workforce as leaders are stuck in the office tidying up the front on a presentation.

I have recognised that a critical role within a successful team is that of a firefighter or offsider, someone who leaders can handball tasks to, so they complete both the urgent and important tasks on their list.

In early 2023, my husband and I diverted our career paths by 13,000kms and moved from the mining communities of Queensland to Kalumbila, a mining community in Zambia. As professionals we held the desire to understand the practices of different countries, companies, and commodities. As parents, we felt a responsibility to expose our children to the world and foster their appreciation of different cultures as well as the luxuries that we often take for granted in Australia. It has not taken me long to find spare time in my day and am now offering it to you as your offsider.
